The “Stiftung Kunsthaus der Stadt Kaufbeuren” pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes. The central idea and goal of the foundation is the promotion, mediation and cultivation of art and culture in Kaufbeuren and the region.

The foundation board manages the foundation's assets, conducts the foundation's business and advises the management of the Kunsthaus. The finances generated by the foundation are exclusively available to the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren.

The foundation consists of a seven-member board whose members, in addition to their personal commitment, contribute specialist knowledge and expertise from their respective professional backgrounds, for example from the fields of law and finance, art and cultural studies, social sciences, architecture and municipal politics. All members work on a voluntary basis and are therefore unpaid. The activities are subject to the supervision of the government of Swabia (Regierung von Schwaben).

As a public foundation with legal capacity under civil law, it was established by Kaufbeuren citizen and entrepreneur Hans Dobler in 1995 and put into practice with the construction of an architecturally remarkable new building in the heart of the old town.
