beständig war die Perle – Werkstätten & Wandel
Programme & Events
Based on the tradition of glass bead production in the Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz district, the artistic research project beständig war die Perle (the pearl was constant) deals with the significance of glass beads as a global commodity.
The starting point is Frauke Zabel's training as a silversmith and goldsmith at the Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz Vocational School for Glass and Jewelry and her learning of the technique of glass bead winding at the Bohemian lamp fire. For the second chapter of the project, starting in November 2025, the focus will be on the craft and the places of production—the workshops—and the collection will be supplemented by works from the vocational school's classes. In addition to the presentation in the exhibition space, walks invite visitors to explore the district. Together, they visit places of current and historical production. The glass bead is used to trace changes in production processes and transformations in Neugablonz. A new video work reflects this exploration of the Neugablonz district back into the exhibition at the Kunsthaus.
Supported by the Danner Foundation and with funds from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art in the program VERBINDUNGSLINIEN of the BBK Bayern.
